Recently you might have had the sudden urge to go take out your camera and go outside, especially if you are a local living in Metro Vancouver. We are in the middle of a mid-January snow flurry, and boy, was I excited when it came early last week! For the majority of us, going into AUTO mode on our dslr’s won’t work; I would suggest you go into Manual, unless you have a “Snow” mode on your camera.

The Basics:
When shooting in the snow, the most important part of your image is White Balance. When shooting a pictures, you might see the snow turn blue, or warmer than it is. You need to change the WB to either Tungsten or Cloudy.

Quick Tips:

Batteries:
Keep your batteries warm. They perform better and hold more power when kept at body temperature before using in the camera. Keep it in your jacket until you are ready to use.

Camera Temperature:
Dont rush to take a photo. Camera need about 10 minutes to change to the colder temperature. Keep it in your camera bag for about 10 minutes in your car outside before you shoot outdoors. This will prevent condensation from building up in the lens.

Snow needs to be WHITE:
Almost every camera has an exposure compensation dial designed to be used in just these circumstances. All you need to do, when you go skiing, is turn the dial up to +1, or even +2 if it is a sunny day and your pictures will be ‘over exposed’ by normal standards, but should be just what you want.

Avoid Flash:
Don’t use flash, especially if it is snowing while you take photos. you will just end up seeing the flakes in front of camera, and they will block whatever you are trying to photograph.

flash vs. no flashDon’t shoot too small:
Not every shot needs to be of an icicle or frozen flower. You can always take wide shots, and capture a whole scene. This shot was taken on a trip to the mountain with the family, where we went to snowboard for the afternoon.

The Best Tip: GO out and shoot! You won’t know what images you could capture unless you actually go out and do it. Have fun!
